Washington, D.C. tends to see a new influx of young professionals to our area each September, and Things To Do is making an extra effort to reach these new members for this bash. Come to our giant fall kickoff bash, and welcome some of our citiy’s newest residents to town.

This party attracts tons of young professionals every year.

Now that it is the Halloween Season, instead of made up ghost stories, how about a real Horror story that shook up the entire nation? How about an incredible tour that takes apart and examines – in incredible detail – our nation’s first Presidential assassination.

This tour is lead by Lincoln scholar and public speaker, Anthony S. Pitch, who is currently authoring “‘They have killed papa dead!’- The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln.” He is also the author of the award winning: “The Burning of Washington: The British Invasion of 1814″. Anthony Pitch offers truly remarkable insights into this historical event.

President Lincoln’s assassination was perhaps one of the most tragic moments in our country’s history. Today, learn about one of America’s most famous Presidents, and the tragic plot that lead to his death. Walk in the footsteps of one of America’s most beloved Presidents and one of America’s most reviled assassins and his co-conspirators. Stand in front of the White House and see where Lincoln delivered his last speech and where John Wilkes Booth vowed to kill him.

See the posh home of Major Henry Rathbone, Lincoln’s theater guest, who struggled with the assassin moments after the murder. This walk also passes by the site where another conspirator stabbed Secretary of State William Seward, then continues to the location where Vice President Andrew Johnson was sworn in as Lincoln’s successor.

We will walk to Ford’s Theater, where Lincoln was mortally wounded on April 14, 1865. We will also see the Petersen House across the road, where Lincoln died the following morning. We will visit where the conspirators boarded and plotted, and where some were arrested in Mary Surratt’s notorious brick boarding house…and we will see much, much more!

After the tour will be a book signing by the tour leader/author.

Flamenco is an individualistic, yet structured folk art from Andalucía, often improvised and spontaneous. The song, dance and guitar are blended together by the passionate rhythms of southern Spain. Spain’s famous poet and writer Fredrico Garcia Lorca, called flamenco one of the most gigantic inventions of the Spanish people.

Complex rhythmic patterns are created by a sophisticated footwork technique, so the flamenco dancer wears special shoes or boots with dozens of nails driven to the soles and heels. The ladies wear long costumes often with many frills and practice for hours their elegant arm and hand movements.

While there are a lot of social clubs in Washington DC, almost too many to list, we’ll be looking at United Social Sports (USS) because they offer great league play games centered, mostly, around  the bar.

Like many social sport groups the main purpose of USS is to bring people together to have fun doing various activities that anyone can do. Apart from fun events that are always coming up, USS has several sports offered in the DC League:

Bar-Skee

Taking the classic Skee-Ball arcade game and turning it into a tournament style social league, this is the largest social sport offered, with 6 Chapters meeting on different days and at various bars across the city.

Bocce

This ancient game is finally beginning to take hold in the US as evident in its inclusion by USS. Only one chapter is set up for Bocce and it’s played over in Walter Pierce Park every Thursday.

Shuffleboard

A bar favorite, which reached the height of its popularity in the 1950’s where tournaments of several hundred teams weren’t unheard of.  Currently there is one chapter playing at Iron Horse Tap Room on Tuesday nights.

Cornhole

Played both indoors and outdoors, cornhole has a mysterious past, but has grown into a favorite drinking game in the past two decades.  An indoor chapter and outdoor chapter have been set up, so you can either pick your favorite or try both.

All Chapters start the next season of play in the last week of July which will go until September.

The 4^th of July is this Sunday and I’m sure you’ve got quite the weekend ahead of you.  Barbeques with friends and families, parties around town and everything else that comes when you rent apartments Washington DC. But have you planned the most important part of the weekend yet? Where are you going to watch the 4th of July fireworks? Haven’t decided yet? Well, we’ve got you covered, with some great locations, so it’s not too late to find a prime spot to view, what many would argue is the best firework show in the country.

Top Recommended Spots:

US Capitol Building: An excellent location to view the fireworks this year, but since this is such a popular location you might want to bring a cooler, blanket and some chairs to stake out a place early in the day. Having a nice 4^th of July picnic is a great lead into a night of fireworks. Plus you’ll get the added bonus of listening to the 1812 overture, which will broadcast across the Capital Building during the show.

Lincoln Memorial: Another great location to watch 4^th of July fireworks, that will surely be popular this year since the renovations to the memorial have been completed.  One of the best features of the Lincoln Memorial, as a firework viewing location, is the reflecting pool which will add wonders to the already gorgeous firework display overhead.

Kicking off at 7pm there will be a BBQ put on by Smokin’ Somethin’ and music by Fatback. Apart from BBQ there will be a wide assortment of snacks and treats that no movie or summer night could be complete without. Check out the full menu here.

Now, if you’re not really in the mood for a BBQ you’ll probably still want to get there around 7pm or soon after, so you can be sure to secure a great viewing spot for the movie.

Speaking about the movie, this week’s film is E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial which will start rolling at 9pm.  It’s strongly recommended that you bring your own blankets, lawn chairs, and coolers so you can enjoy the night comfortably.

Located across the Potamic in Fort Myers, this is a great bowling alley for both adults and the kids.  Since it is on the base you will need to show you ID and have you vehicle searched before you are permitted to enter.

Lucky Strike (21+ after 8pm)

The District’s only downtown bowling alley it’s quite convenient for those of you non commuters living in the city center.  It’s also a lounge so if you’re planning on going after 8pm, leave the kids at home.  Due to this lounge they have a dress code which they do enforce.

Strike Bethesda (21+ after 9pm)

Venturing North of DC you can find Strike Bethesda with a great special tonight. “Monday Night Strike!” kicks off at 9pm with unlimited bowling & shoe rentals for only $18! A great deal to start the week off with and in a very trendy bowling alley.

While the storm might be keeping you indoors tonight, the weather should be back to it’s usual hot & sunny Summer self  just in time for the 4th of July Weekend.

Fun in the Summer Su…Moon?  That’s right! Tonight over at Capital Skyline’s Pool they will be hosting a fun night of “Trivia Under the Stars”, an annual event.

As most of us who rent apartments washington dc know all about the Capital Skyline hotel pool parties and this is one event to not miss.

So if you’re looking for a fun night of brain busting trivia & pool antics with 5 to 7 of your closest trivia minded friends you definitely need to check this place out.  You should start making you way over though since this night starts at 7pm!

Have you had your fill of musical nights? Well, why not go for a night at the theatre instead? As it just so happens that the Eisenhower Theatre has a new performance entitled, Thurgood, staring Laurence Fishburne. It looks like a excellent performance, one you should definitely try to see . It will be running until the 20^th so you have plenty of opportunites.  Here is what the Eisenhower Theater has to say about Thurgood:

“In Thurgood, Tony Award–winning actor Laurence Fishburne reprises his Broadway role as Thurgood Marshall, the first African American to be appointed to the Supreme Court. From his early days as the civil rights lawyer who argued Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, a landmark case which led to the end of institutionalized segregation, to his appointment to the highest court in the land, Thurgood Marshall stood for justice while lifting the standing of his race.
