Visit The Theater
If you’re in the mood for something for your adult-eyes-only, leave the kids at home and enjoy the raunchy production of “The Aristocrats” put on by Washington’s naughtiest theater company, Cherry Red Productions, at the Warehouse this Saturday. Other productions in the area that have not been cancelled as of yet include: the Shakespeare Free for All’s “Julius Ceasar” performances on Saturday and Sunday, and Olney Theater’s free performances of “The Taming of the Shrew”.

Enjoy Family Fun Time… At A Water Park?
Yes, we know a huge hurricane is on it’s way, so why not get wet on purpose? Massanutten Water Park is indoors! You can also take the kids to enjoy the black-light Monster Mini Golf course, which is also indoors.

Treat Yourself To A Saturday Brunch
What better way is there to spend a lazy, rainy, Saturday than a Bottomless Tequila Brunch? El Centro D.F. serves brunch from 11am-2pm on Saturdays and Sundays with brunch tacos, Mexican small plates and bottomless tequila cocktails.

Party At The Beach… Without Actually Going To The Beach
The Town Tavern has trekked in two tons of sand for the “Flip Flop Farewell Bash” to commemorate the end of summer. If you RSVP on the tavern’s website, you will be invited to a free open bar from 8-9pm. Though Columbia Heights Day has been cancelled, the Wonderland Ballroom still plans to honor all the drink specials they had planned for the event. And good news! Room 11, RedRocks, and Meridian Pint will be doing the same! On Saturday, celebrate New Orleans-style at Bayou with Zachary Smith and the Dixie Power Trio.

The Best Rainy Day Refuge: The Movies
Two big releases this weekend include “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” and “Our Idiot Brother”. Check out movie times and locations in the DC area here.

Bring your beach chair or a blanket to enjoy a family-friendly movie shown on a giant screen on Dewey Beach. The movies will start at dusk around 8:30pm at Dagsworthy Street and the Beach. Take note that metered parking is in effect, but all other parking is FREE Monday-Wednesday after 5pm.

Go swimming, of course!
There are pools all over the DC area, but here is a list of our absolute favorite spots to make a splash: Volcano Island Waterpark at Algonkian Regional Park had a Polynesian-themed makeover last year giving the park a new sand play area, more shade, and a smoking volcano, Water Park at Bohrer Park in Montgomery county features 250-foot slides, the Old Town Pool in Alexandria, Great Waves Water Park at Cameron Run Regional Park also has batting cages and golf, and the Bethesda Pool.

Eat something sweet and icy!
Did you know that July is National Ice Cream Month? It’s not like we need an excuse to eat ice cream in this weather, but we’re not arguing! Instead of traditional ice cream, we recommend gelato or sorbeto. At Dolcezza, (in Bethesda, Dupont Circle and Georgetown), their seasonal sorbets include a sour cherry and just-released plum that are not to be missed! But my personal favorite gelatto flavor is the Valrhona Chocolate Amargo. Another gelateria that we love is Boccato in Clarendon, where we highly recommend the cake batter flavor. And if your craving for sweets tends to emerge after normal business hours, check out
And if your sundae cravings tend to emerge around midnight? Check one of the city’s newer offerings, Serendipity 3, which is located in New York, but stays open really, really late.

Sit in an air-conditioned theater.
There are several summer blockbuster movies out already and few more opening up this weekend. Enjoy some popcorn and an icy cold soda in a theater that is sure to be much cooler than the outside temperatures. New releases this weekend include: Captain America: The First Avenger and Friends With Benefits. If you have kids to entertain, check out Cars 2, Green Lantern or Winnie the Pooh. And don’t be the last person on the planet who hasn’t seen the epic final chapter to the incredible Harry Potter saga, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2!

Walk around in an air-conditioned gallery.
There is no shortage of incredible galleries to peruse in the DC area and guess what? They usually blast the A/C! This weekend offers two new openings: FotoDC is opening its own (semi) permanent gallery space in Adams Morgan called FotoSpace and “Wall Mountables” will be on display at the D.C. Arts Center as well.

Capital Portraits: Treasures from Washington Private Collections, 1730-2010

The National Portrait Gallery is hosting a survey of works from private collections, spanning multiple schools and generations from the 18th to 21st centuries. Selections include colonial and Impressionist portraits by John Singleton Copley and Mary Cassatt, Andy Warhol’s unmistakable pop art and Kehinde Wiley’s depictions of present-day hip-hop and athletic icons as conquering Renaissance heroes.

A Time to Kill
Washington, DC; Performances Through 6/19
Arena Stage is hosting the theatrical world premiere of Grisham’s first novel, 1989’s “A Time to Kill,” in a special pre-Broadway engagement. The adaptation by Rupert Holmes tells the story of Carl Lee Hailey, a father who faces murder charges after seeking revenge for a racially motivated crime committed against his daughter. It’s up to an idealistic young attorney to stand up to the prosecution and the growing tension in a small Mississippi town.

U.S. Open Championship
Bethesda, MD; Happening 6/13 – 6/19
1997 was the last time the U.S. Open was played on the Blue Course at Congressional in Bethesda, and Tiger Woods finished tied for 19th. See for yourself how he finishes the championship in 2011. He will face stiff competition from Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald, as well as the world’s current “Number 1” player, Martin Kaymer of Germany.

Wicked
Washington, DC; Performances 6/15 – 8/21
If you have never seen this Stephen Schwartz musical, which won three Tony Awards in 2003, do not miss this chance. It last played the Kennedy Center in 2005, and the entire run sold out almost immediately. There are plenty of good seats still available this time around; so take the trip to Oz!

Smithsonian Folklife Festival
Washington, DC; Happening 6/30 – 7/11
Each summer, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival celebrates the idea of living traditions: Concepts or institutions that affect society on an ongoing basis. This year’s festival includes features on the food and culture of Colombia; the legacy of the Peace Corps and its efforts to promote peace; and the rich history of American rhythm and blues music.

The Merchant of Venice
Washington, DC; Performances 6/21 – 7/24
Don’t miss your chance to see one of Shakespeare’s most controversial plays performed by the Shakespeare Theatre Company in DC. This tragic comedy broadly explores intolerance, gender and sexuality, the nature of greed and revenge, and the meaning of justice.

AFI Silverdocs
Silver Spring, MD; Happening 6/20 – 6/26
Last years’s AFI’s Silverdocs festival included 102 films screened at the Silver Spring theater, and some, like “Restrepo,” “Freakonomics” and “Waiting for Superman” went on to become household names. This year’s festival’s full schedule hasn’t been released yet, but expect a mix of new and old, from independent and high-profile directors alike.

Race: Are We So Different?
Washington, DC; Exhibition On Display 6/18 – 1/1/12
Exploring race as a matter of science is the aim of this new exhibition, developed by the American Anthropological Association and the Science Museum of Minnesota, that tries to answer a very fundamental question: What is race?

The doors open at 7:30pm and after 9pm, it is 21 and up only. Glee’s sophomore season is coming to a close tonight and you will not want to miss your opportunity to watch it with fellow fans. The Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse is a unique combination of a full restaurant located inside of a movie theater. You can enjoy a full restaurant and bar menu along with table side service while sitting in over-sized, comfy chairs. Seating is limited for this special event, so don’t be late!

Glee won four Emmy awards in 2010, including one for Ryan Murphy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and one for Jane Lynch for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. In addition to the outstanding cast of regulars, Gee has featured guest appearances by such talented performers as Gwyneth Paltrow, Carol Burnett, John Stamos, Britney Spears, Kristen Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Molly Shannon, Olivia Newton-John and Neil Patrick Harris, who won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on the show.

Wattage will be happening at both The Shop at Fort Fringe and the Rasmuson Theater at the NMAI. Four different performances make up Wattage. Capsule 33 was directed, designed and performed by Thaddeus Phillips of Lucidity Suitcase Intercontinental and is the first theater work run using entirely sustainable energy; audience powered foot pumps literally provide the energy to run the lights, and the sound comes from smashed iPhones. Ghost-lands of an Urban NDN, Run Through The Unquiet Mind, and Walking On Turtle Island make up the other performances of Wattage.
